SIM/FW How to Hack an Election - AI & the Threat to Democracy

It's election year again. Brace yourselves. "Data is the new oil", "Facebook is farming our data", "Russia hacked our elections." Data has become a zeitgeist, a character of its own in current affairs, but the way that it is collected, manipulated and often used against us still remains a dark art.

SIM/FW How to Hack an Election - AI & the Threat to Democracy

September 17, 2020

5:30 to 7:00 PM

In this interactive talk, we demystify the technology that makes data valuable: Machine Learning: its relationship to AI, and how it has proved an invaluable tool for mass persuasion in the digital age.

We first demystify the roots of AI and Machine learning and the types of problems that they solve, before showing how data scientists were able to take these tools to the arena of political persuasion. Along the way we ask deep questions about what data privacy means and why it is important for society, how data is shared in the modern world, and why data scientists should begin to follow a moral code.

We leave attendees with a look into the future of AI and Ethics and what we can all do to take control of our data-driven destinies.

Key concepts covered will include:

  • Machine Learning
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Security & Privacy
  • Data Breaches
  • Data Ethics
